Powell Gilbert is ‘highly recommended’ for Intellectual Property with partners Penny Gilbert, Tim Powell, Zoë Butler, and Alex Wilson all recognised as Life Science Stars (Intellectual Property) in the 2015 UK rankings.
The recommendation stated:
Powell Gilbert is an intellectual property firm with broad expertise in life sciences. The firm is able to leverage the technical science backgrounds of many of its practicing attorneys in order to better advise clients concerning the unique patent challenges that operate in industries including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, nanotechnology, vaccination, diagnostics and innovative therapy.
One client named firm partners Alex Wilson and Penny Gilbert as exemplars of the firm’s practice, describing the two as “technically sophisticated and able to coordinate cases across multiple jurisdictions, both domestic and foreign.” Wilson recently assisted the drug company Napp in a multi-jurisdictional patent defence against a generic company’s attempt to enter the market, while Gilbert acted as lead in a large case with broad industry ramifications that saw the firm represent Human Genome Science (Glaxo- SmithKline) in a patent case that reached the Supreme Court.
Zoë Butler represented BSN Medical Limited in a pan-European matter that brought to the fore complex jurisdictional questions concerning UK court’s response to simultaneous claims in Germany and Swiss courts. Indicative of what one client called “advanced technical proficiency,” the team that Powell Gilbert put forward in this instance consisted of several legal experts, each of whom hold a technical degree in a life sciences related field.
