LONDON – Specialist IP law firm Powell Gilbert LLP (PG) has expanded its premier team of IP lawyers with the appointment of solicitor Douglas Jayatilaka as an Associate. He has a technical background in physical science, having completed a BSc in Mathematics with Physics and having further studied nuclear fusion energy.
Since qualifying as a lawyer at the Government Legal Department in September 2021, Douglas has worked in its Commercial Law Group, specialising in commercial litigation. He has represented the Government and instructed counsel on a wide range of matters including in cases before the Supreme Court and CJEU. He has had particular experience working with the Defence Intellectual Property Rights department of the Ministry of Defence, advising on various procurement challenges and contractual disputes.
Douglas is the third lateral hire for PG in the last 12 months, following the appointments of Associates Adam Mackinnon and Theo Cooper in April and October, respectively. The firm also recently announced the internal promotions of Dr Tess Waldron and Dr Joel Coles to the firm’s partnership, and Dr Richard Fawcett to Of Counsel, reflecting PG’s continued commitment to further progressing its team of outstanding IP litigators.
Dr Penny Gilbert, Partner at PG, commented:
“Douglas’s expertise combines impressive scientific knowledge with acute commercial awareness and extensive experience across a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters. During his work for the Government Legal Department, he has advised on cases heard before the highest courts– both in the UK and in Europe – as well as in relation to some interesting and complex areas of the IP rights regime. We look forward to him bringing this unique experience to bear for our clients, and we’re delighted to welcome him to the PG team.”
