The relatively young and "aggressive" Powell Gilbert had another strong year, standing out in a number of technically complex cases in the UK patent courts. It also hired partner Anna Carboni from Wilberforce Chambers and added a handful of new associates from competitors. The boutique continues to represent Human Genome Sciences in a multi-year case against Eli Lilly related to biotech patents. This will be the first patent case before the new Supreme Court and is scheduled for July 2011. Nokia is working with a seasoned team in a dispute with Apple over a smart phone user-interface technology. New clients of the firm this year include Birkenstock, Competition RX and Yum! Brands.
